A Discourse Approach in Reading week12

Definition and Classification  








First of all, the teacher checked our name in the classroom. After finished checking, she reviewed Cause and Effect which is The Effect of Stress by asking about main idea each of paragraphs, and also discourse markers in the text. From this her reviews, I also knew that what is discourse markers. They made me understand what is clause and what is effect.


After we finished studying this content, we also had to learn new content which is Definition and Classification. 


In textbooks, you are sure to meet unfamiliar technical words and their definitions. You will also find that writers use classification to divide general concepts into a number of different types. Identifying and understanding texts that contain definition and classification will help your academic reading.


 I would like to show you some examples and explanations 


 Phonetics is the study of the speech sounds used in human languages. 

Explanations: Here a technical term is defined by the words that follow a form of the verb to be

You will see:

Phonetics = technical term

is = discourse marker

the study of the speech sounds used in human languages = definition





Then, she gave us find the meaning of definition and classification from Cambridge Dictionary. Here are the meaning:

 Definition : a statement that explains the meaning of a word or phrase 

Psychology is by definition an inexact science.




Next, she showed us some common Definition and Classification Markers. She assigned us to find the meaning and make sentences by adding them too.


When we finished studying common Definition and Classification Markers, she gave us do the Skill Practice 1 by finding the technical term, highlighting discourse marker and its definition respectively. 


After that, we started doing Skill practice 2 by reading each of paragraphs. Then, we has to circle the Classification Markers. Next, draw a diagram showing the classification.




When we finished doing this exercise, she gave write the diagrams on the whiteboard. I would like to show you about the photo which done by us.




Later, she told us to reread paragraphs 2-5 in Skill Practice 2 and highlight the definitions of the following terms which are on my hand out.

Finally, she assigned us read text 1 and we had to study in the afternoon of this day. Let's have enjoy meal together.

 What did you learn today?
I started studying new lesson which is Definition and Classification.


 What did you find easy?
In my opinion, Finding the discourse markers is easy for me. Because I know these conjunction as well and I will learn as much as I can in order to understand and do in testing as well. 


 What did you find difficult?
Personally, some words are difficult because they are unknown words.


 What did you solve the problem?
I tried to pay attention during the class and notice the discourse markers in order to know what does technical term mean.


 What are your attitudes towards the lesson?
Personally, this lesson is important in reading. Particularly, in academic reading because when we read about academic reading, we will see the technical terms which are quite hard. We can predict their meaning by noticing discourse markers. They will help us understand as well. Yet, you must have been better skill in reading before. If you haven't, you can't understand or read the text related with academic reading as well.
