Remains of His Holiness enshrined

THE cremated remains of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, the late Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, were enshrined at Wat Bovoranives Vihara yesterday in a ceremony yesterday.

HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, along with the Prince's daughters HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana and HRH Princess Bajra Kitiyabha, collected the remains from Wat Thepsirintharawas where the royally sponsored cremation had taken place on Wednesday.

The remains were then moved to Wat Bovoranives Vihara's Tamnak Phetch and people were allowed to pay their respects from 9am yesterday. Tamnak Petch will also be open to the public from 8am to 8pm today and tomorrow morning.

At 4.30pm tomorrow, HRH Princess Somsavali will - on behalf of His Majesty - perform a merit-making ceremony for His Holiness's remains before escorting them to the temple's Tamnak Doem. Built during the reign of King Rama IV, Tamnak Doem houses the relics of all former abbots of Wat Bovoranives Vihara. His Holiness was the temple's sixth abbot.

Phra Sakkayawongwisut, the temple's assistant abbot, said yesterday that HRH Princess Somsavali would also enshrine parts of His Holiness's remains in Phra Vihara Keng on Sunday.

"Once the remains are enshrined, people can come and pay their respects every day," he said.

Haul of tusks, pangolin parts in Samui ‘will lead to arrests’

THE AUTHORITIES confiscated Bt40 million worth of elephant tusks and pangolin scales at Samui International Airport earlier this month, Customs Department’s director-general Kulis Sombatsiri said at a press conference yesterday.

"Officials minutely X-rayed cargo boxes and found these illicit items," he said, adding that this was the biggest haul this year.

He explained that the boxes contained 281 tusks and 12 bags of pangolin scales, worth Bt38 million and Bt2 million respectively.

He said the haul had been sent out of Nigeria on December 8 and the destination was Laos.
"We closely checked the air cargo after getting a tip-off that illegal ivory traders would be transporting illicit items via airports," Kulis said, adding that the tusks would undergo DNA tests in a move to gather evidence against wrongdoers.
"The test will take about a month," he said, adding that he expected the evidence to lead to the arrest and prosecution of wrongdoers.

Thailand and Cambodia agreed on Saturday to open more border checkpoints and expressed hope that their capitals would be connected by train by next year.

The new checkpoints will ease congestion at the Aranyaprathet-Poipet crossing, the main tourism and trade connection between the two countries.

Miss Philippines crowned Miss Universe after live TV mix-up

LAS VEGAS: Miss Philippines was named Miss Universe on Sunday (Dec 20) in a drama-filled turn worthy of a telenovela.
The pageant's host, comedian Steve Harvey, misread his cue card which he initially said had Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner.
She was briefly, very fleetingly, crowned in Las Vegas and started the customary smiling and waving. But not for long. As she blew kisses, Harvey awkwardly said "I have to apologize. The first runner up is Colombia."

"Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," he added, with the Colombian contestant left like a deer in headlights and the actual winner, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, looking stunned. And all on live television with millions watching from Manila to Manchester.

"It was my fault," Harvey stammered as a perplexed audience held its breath. "Please don't hold it against the ladies," added the talk show host.
The awkward mistake spread like wildfire, with the #MissUniverse2015 hashtag trending.
"People are human, mistakes can happen. Luckily some have the bravery to own it & take a step to correct it. Hugs to #MissUniverse2015 wow," tweeted Audrey Bolte, who described herself as Miss Ohio USA 2012.
The contest, held in Las Vegas this year, is wildly popular in Latin America and much of Asia.
"I AM SO REGRETFUL"
Steve Harvey later turned to Twitter to apologise for his gaffe, but not without making a new one.
"I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia," he tweeted. "This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful."

He later deleted the tweet and posted a new one, with both "Philippines" and "Colombia" spelt correctly.
The pageant was its first edition since the annual beauty show was thrust into controversy when then co-owner and US presidential candidate, Donald Trump, made disparaging remarks about immigrants.
When asked why she wanted to be Miss Universe, Wurtzbach replied that, "I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV awareness, that is timely and relevant to my country."
"I want to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart," she said.
