Thailand celebrates the King's birthday
Photos have begun to come in
from Sanam Luang in Bangkok. With the Grand Palace and the Temple of the
Emerald Buddha in the background, it is an impressive sight at any time of the day or
year.
Night has fallen and, fortunately, the rains that hit the city late this afternoon have largely stopped. There are still large crowds of well-wishers outside Siriraj Hospital.
Our photographers have been busy for days covering events, both large and small, in honor of His Majesty the King's 88th birthday.

DECEMBER 6: Celebrations
continued today with a huge practice session for Friday's Bike for Dad procession. Here the bikers are seen crossing
the Phra Nangklao Bridgeheading towards Nonthaburi.
Similar practices took place in provinces throughout the country. In nearby Pathum Thani 7000 bikers took part and later some of them, led by the provincial governor, posed for this photo. If you look closely it says "Love Dad".

Drought hampers border trade on Moei River
The shallow Moei River is affecting cargo transport from Mae
Sot district of Tak province to Myanmar on the opposite bank on Monday. (Photo
by Assawin Pinitwong)
Drought conditions not usually seen until February have hit
the Moei River, affecting trade and tap-water supplies along the Thai-Myanmar
border.
The sandy bed of the river was visible in places
adjacent to Mae Sot district of Tak province on Monday, hampering river
traffic. Trenches were dug through the sand in places to let cargo through.
The Mae Sot waterworks authority had to resort
to the same solution to pump water from the Moei River for production of tap
water for residents. Rationing has been imposed.
