A Discourse Approach in Reading week4

 On Tuesday, 25 January, 2016

 NARRATIVE CONTINUED . . .

We started class with discussing with partner about the lesson we studied last week in a minute. Then, our teacher gave us to do the exercise with completing the summary of the first part of the story by adding three fairly short sentences and discussed our ideas first with the partner or another student.

Here is the summary of the first part of the story "SECRET"

Kylie feels left out from her mother and Philip's activities. She becomes interested in the chickens in the yard. Somehow her secret helps her to feel less lonely. She finds a second egg and then finds out where others are being laid by an unhealthy-looking hen. Later, she finds raggedy hen, another egg and shares her secret with hen. Her step-father tells her that not to open the lid of the bore well but she does. She looks on her photo album, misses her father and wants to live with him.

The sentences that are underlined are the summary which the instruction gives us to identify three sentences according to be previous sentences.
Then, she gave us to read the story in second part. When we finished reading, put these sentences in the right order to produce a summary of the second part of the story.

Here is the summary of the second part

Firstly, Kylie watches the hen sitting on the eggs. Second, she takes the lid of the well. Afterwards, she starts to go down the well with her photo album every day.Later, she watches Philip and her mother and wonders why her father is not with them. Next, Philip discovers her in the well and hits her. After that, she throws the chicks down the well. Furthermore, she hits the hen and throws it down the well. Then, she throws the chicks down the well. Eventually, she cuts off her head from the special photo and throws it away.

When we finished reading, we did the exercise in part D. We needed to choose one of the verbs in order to identify how we feel about each of character of this story.

Here is my feeling of character of this story

I feel sorry for Kylie because she doesn't live with her father. She's lonely.

ผลการค้นหารูปภาพสำหรับ lonely girl

I dislike for Kylie's mother because she's only interested with Philip. Moreover, she always leaves Kylie out from their activities.

I disapprove of Philip because He hits and abuses Kylie.

After that, our teacher read the story again and translated a little bit so I could understand what she said. My friends told me about her thinking that toward to this story to me. It made me more understanding about this story.

Next, we continued to do next exercise in Part E by choosing three themes which we think it is mainstream in this short story. Then, find out which three are chosen most often by the class and talk about the reasons for your choices.

Here are three themes that I had chosen in the class

  children's right

 Conflict between different generations

 loneliness

The reason that I had chosen there mainstream because the children should have right to do what they want and they should be interested from their parents in order to make them feel better. In case of Kylie, her mother and step-father left her out from their activities. It made her feel lonely and repressed so we shouldn't do like her mother and step father, we should encourage the children, pay more attention to them and love them as they are.

After that, we voted the there themes that were important of this short story. They are as follow:

Here are our there themes that voted by us

 1. Neglect

 2. Loneliness

 3. Conflict between different generations

After that, we discussed about the story's symbols which are as follow:

The eggs : they liked Kylie's secret when she felt lonely

The well : it liked the special place of Kylie

The photos : they liked Kylie's memories in the past

Kylie's cutting of the photo : It liked a part of her secret that made her offended in her life.

Next, our teacher taught us about language feathers of narrative in text organization which are as follow:

Orientation consists of Who, Where, Variety of verbs/processes

 Variety of verbs

 Linking = v. to be

Mental processes are mental, covert kinds of going-on

- Thinking verbs: think, understand, assume, conclude, discover, consider, doubt, believe.

- Feeling verbs: love, enjoy, hate, dislike, regret, fear, like, prefer

- Verbs of sense: see, notice, observe, feel, smell, taste, watch, hear, listen

 Action-material

Complication consists of linking words to do with time and specific participants

Resolution is to result in events

Finally, the teacher told us that next Tuesday we are going to test about Recount and Narrative, so I need to prepare myself best in order to get the better scores in this test.
